Intoxicating spring blooms.

The gardens around our heath and marsh houses are absolute gems. As are our three plant markets with international flair. The stallholders offer a wide range of heritage, almost forgotten and special variety plants and are happy to share their knowledge with you. The markets attract visitors from all over northern Europe.

Our gardening season begins in April with North Germany's largest plant market. In July, our grounds are awash with the magnificent colours and smells of hundreds of different varieties of roses, while our summer plant market in August always has something special to offer.

Spring plant market

Spring has sprung! We begin our gardening season in mid-April with an impressive variety of herbs, rock plants, shrubs, specialist ferns and other heralds of spring. Around 130 exhibitors from Germany and neighbouring countries offer their latest varieties and specialities on small stands. All plants come directly from the producers; nothing is sourced from large wholesalers.

Rose market

Europeans have been worshipping the queen of plants for thousands of years now. In some cultures the rose symbolised youth and beauty; in others it was a sign of death and so planted at sacrificial sites and on burial mounds. The diversity of rose varieties which are available easily exceeds the number of interpretations of their significance. At our rose market you can buy over 800 different types from carefully selected rose growers, who are also happy to provide helpful tips and advice on care, fertilisers and pruning. Learn all about the rose's cultural history, from the ancient world to the present day. In addition to the plant sellers there are also other stall holders offering rose-themed products, such as arts and crafts items, literature, cosmetics and much more besides.

Summer plant market

In August, at the height of summer, when everything is in bloom our summer plant market transforms the museum's grounds into a sea of colourful plants and flowers. Visitors will find beautiful blossoms and fragrances wherever they turn, with over 100 exhibitors exhibiting their own, sometimes highly exotic, varieties and plants. Each year the market focuses on a special theme, such as water gardens or wild plants. Experts give talks on the chosen theme in our lecture hall and also take part in special events which provide visitors with even more information.
