Looking forward.
What are we currently building and researching?

Within the scope of the ‘Königsberger Straße - Heimat in der jungen Bundesrepublik’ project we are engaging with contemporary history.

In the post-war era Lower Saxony began a settlement programme to provide housing for, and to integrate, some 1.85 million people from the former German territories in eastern Europe. In just a few years this programme changed the face of many villages and towns in the region beyond recognition.

To record the construction methods and cultural history of the 1945 - 1970 era, which also had a huge impact on Harburg Rural District, we are building ‘Königsberger Straße’, a section of road with buildings which are characteristic for the time in which they were constructed and so tell the story of the young Federal Republic of Germany.

The project will cost a total of 6.14 million euros and take over four years to construct.

The ensemble of buildings

In the coming years we will be constructing a number of buildings dating from the 1950's and 1960's. They will tell specific architectural and family histories which took place in Harburg Rural District while also portraying Germany's national development.

The following buildings will be constructed at the open-air museum in a series of phases lasting until the end of 2022:

  • A typical petrol station (‘Typentankstelle’)
  • A row of shops with six businesses (‘Ladenzeile’)
  • Two semi-detached houses and a small detached house with outbuildings (‘Doppelhaus’/ ‘Siedlungshaus’)
  • A prefabricated building to demonstrate this new form of construction, which reflected the influence of western culture (‘Fertighaus’).
